Interesting piece on Weta’s use of data centres in the making of James Cameron’s Avatar:

“Weta performs its magic using an unusual kind of data center for the data-intensive creation process, with such specifications as 4,000 servers in a 10,000 square foot facility, and 104 TB of RAM. Weta Digital has said that each minute of Avatar is made up of 17.28 GB of data.”

“Amazon’s announcement last month of spot pricing for cloud computing services has prompted some cloud experts to begin discussing the potential for a public cloud exchange. Cloud technologists are intrigued by the potential applications for commodity-style trading of compute capacity, but say a cloud exchange would require the right model and market maker to succeed.”

Broadband Penetration – how does South Africa compare?

“South Africa continues to lag behind other OECD countries in terms of broadband penetration rates. South Africa currently has around 2-million broadband subscribers, equating to a broadband penetration rate of 4 broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants – well below the OECD average of 22.8.

The Department of Communications (DoC) recently released its Adjusted Estimates of National Expenditure (AENE) in which it estimates that the total number of PC broadband subscribers in South Africa is projected to hit 2-million in 2009/2010, while the number of broadband subscribers per 100 people is set to reach 3 by the end of this financial year.”

Galaxy Gaming Opens World Class Data Centre

Galaxy Gaming, Inc. revealed to investors attending the LD Micro Conference last Thursday in Los Angeles, that it has officially began operating its Global Data Centre. The Data Centre will be used to collect and process data from casino gaming tables worldwide and is a major component to accomplishing Galaxy Gaming’s goal of connecting live table games to a globally distributed data operations centre.
